A network of six remotely controlled solar observatories monitoring solar oscillations (see Helioseismology), owned and operated by the University of Birmingham, England. BiSON stations are sited at Teide Observatory, Tenerife (opened 1975); Mount Wilson Observatory, California (opened 1992 but previously on Haleakala, Hawaii, 1981–91); Carnarvon, Western Australia (opened 1985); the South African Astronomical Observatory (opened 1990); Las Campanas Observatory, Chile (opened 1991); and the Paul Wild Observatory, New South Wales (opened 1992).
