  • The ratio of the relative speeds of a fluid and a rigid body to the speed of sound in that fluid under the same conditions of temperature and pressure. If the Mach number exceeds 1 the fluid or body is moving at a supersonic speed. If the Mach number exceeds 5 it is said to be hypersonic. The number is named after Ernst Mach (1838–1916).

Space Exploration

  • The ratio of the speed of a body to the speed of sound in the medium through which the body travels. In the Earth's atmosphere, Mach 1 is reached when a body (such as an aircraft or spacecraft) ‘passes the sound barrier’, at a velocity of 331 m per second (1 192 kph) at sea level. A space shuttle reaches Mach 15 (about 17 700 kph an hour) 6.5 minutes after launch.

    The Mach number is named after Austrian physicist Ernst Mach.

Chemical Engineering

  • The ratio of the speed of a body or a fluid to the speed of sound in that body or fluid at the same temperature and pressure conditions. Where the speed exceeds the speed of sound (i.e. Mach 1), the speed is supersonic. Choked flow of air in a pipe or through an aperture occurs at Mach 1. It is named after Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach (1838–1916).
