A space research laboratory on a space shuttle that doubled the living space and quadrupled the room for payload hardware. The module was 4 m in diameter and 2.7 m long, with a payload capacity of 2 160 kg. The modules were built by SPACEHAB Inc. of Arlington, Virginia, who paid NASA to launch them. The company then leased experiment space to NASA, governmental agencies, private industry, universities, and research institutions. The first Spacehab was launched on 21 June 1993 aboard the space shuttle Endeavour and carried 22 experiments. The second Spacehab was launched on 3 February 1994 aboard the space shuttle Discovery, carrying 13 experiments that included crystal growth research to develop improved semiconductors. The third Spacehab flight was on 3 February 1995 on board Discovery. The latter Spacehab was an improved version with a camera to assist the mission's rendezvous docking with the Russian space station Mir. Spacehab was last shipped in August 2007 aboard space shuttle Endeavour.
