The body of law governing space-related activities. This is generally part of international law, although national space laws have been passed in more than 20 individual countries, including the USA, UK, and Russia. The major laws for space exploration have been developed by the United Nations (UN), including five international treaties and five sets of principles. The treaties include the Moon Treaty (never ratified), the Outer Space Treaty, Liability Convention, Rescue Agreement for astronauts, and Registration Convention for objects launched into space. The UN defines astronauts as ‘envoys of mankind in space’ who should receive all possible assistance in the event of accident, distress, or emergency landing. Another UN law covers international liability for damages caused by spacecraft on Earth or to other spacecraft.
