His four space shuttle flights include two missions to service the Hubble Space Telescope, on Endeavour in December 1993 and on Discovery in December 1999. He has logged more than 1 000 hours in space with one space walk of eight hours. Nicollier joined the ESA as a research scientist in 1976. He was selected a member of the first group of European astronauts in 1978 for training at NASA's Johnson Space Center in 1980.
