A faint but distinctive constellation of the northern sky, representing the hair of the Egyptian Queen Berenice. It is notable for a scattering of faint stars that make up the Coma Star Cluster. The constellation’s brightest star is Beta Comae Berenices, magnitude 4.3. Coma Berenices contains a number of galaxies which are members of the Virgo Cluster, as well as a considerably more distant cluster of galaxies, the Coma Cluster. Its two most famous galaxies, M64 (the Black Eye Galaxy) and NGC 4565, a 10th-magnitude spiral seen edge-on, are both about 20 million l.y. away, closer to us than either cluster.
