Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1689–94), the daughter of James II by his first wife Anne Hyde. She married William of Orange in 1677, and in 1688–89 supported her husband against her father during the Glorious Revolution. She always deferred to her husband and refused to become queen in 1689 unless he was made king. Her popularity both in the United Provinces and in England enabled William III to trust her with the administration of England during his frequent absences abroad. Her lack of children and her quarrel with her sister Anne, the successor to the throne, saddened her last years.
