Water-soluble vitamin C (C6H8O6), related to glucose, that occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits. It is an antioxidant and reducing agent with several biological functions and it cannot be synthesized by humans; in extreme cases lack of dietary vitamin C causes scurvy.
