单词 moving-coil instrument
释义
moving-coil instrument

Physics
  • A measuring instrument in which current or voltage is determined by the couple on a small coil pivoted between the poles of a magnet with curved poles, giving a radial magnetic field. When a current flows through the coil it turns against a return spring. If the angle through which it turns is α‎, the current I is given by I=k‎α‎/BAN, where B is the magnetic flux density, A is the area of the coil and N is its number of turns; k‎ is a constant depending on the strength of the return spring. The instrument is suitable for measuring d.c. but can be converted for a.c. by means of a rectifier network. It is usually made as a galvanometer and converted to an ammeter or voltmeter by means of a shunt or a multiplier.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • A measuring instrument that is usually used as a galvanometer. It depends for its operation on the interaction between a steady magnetic field and the magnetic field induced in a movable coil carrying the current to be measured. The instrument is designed so that the coil rotates in the magnetic flux density and the angular deflection is directly proportional to the current to be measured. Moving-coil instruments have a relatively low power consumption and a uniformly divided scale. The magnetic flux density is usually provided by the suitably shaped pole pieces of a permanent magnet although an electromagnet may be used. The instrument is only suitable for use with direct current but may be adapted for alternating-current measurements by means of a suitable rectifier (see rectifier instrument). It can be used as a voltmeter with a large series resistance.
