单词 mascon
释义
mascon

Physics
  • A gravitational anomaly on the surface of the moon resulting from a concentration of mass below the lunar surface. They occur in circular lunar maria and were caused either by the mare basalt as it flooded the basins or by uplift of high-density mantle material when the basins were formed.

Astronomy
  • A region of a planetary body that is either made of, or underlain by, denser-than-average material, as evidenced by an increased gravitational pull above it. The word is a contraction of mass concentration. Mascons first revealed their presence by the effects they had on the motion of spacecraft orbiting the Moon; they lie beneath many of the major lunar mare basins. Mars also has mascons associated with its impact basins.

Space Exploration
  • Contraction of mass concentration. Any of a number of areas on the Moon where gravity is stronger, particularly under the major mare basins, evidently due to localized area of denser rock. Mascons cause slight perturbations to the motions of craft orbiting the Moon.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • Abbreviation for mass concentration. There are about ten large-scale positive gravity anomalies on the Moon, associated with the large circular maria (see mare). The basalt filling the multi-ringed impact basins only partly accounts for the excess mascons per unit area, and central subsurface uplift of denser mantle material into the feldspathic lunar highland crust during the impact is required to provide the observed values of up to +2.2 × 10−3 m/s2 (+220 mgal) observed in the Mare Imbrium.
