A register in a computer whose bits specify the data required in an operation, i.e. they mask an operation. For example, in an associative memory the bits mask the fields that will not participate in a match, in an interrupt controller the bits mask interrupts, and in a DMA (direct memory access) controller the bits mask incoming requests for service.
