| 释义 | SMF (Single-Mode Fiber) A type of glass optical fiber (GOF) with a very thin inner core that forces light rays to propagate along a single mode, or physical path, through the fiber. SMF has a core diameter of 5–10 microns, as illustrated in Figure S-4. As light sources, SMF transmission systems employ highly sophisticated laser diodes, which can couple efficiently to such a thin inner core and can fire collimated optical signals in the 1310 nm and 1550 nm windows. As SMF supports only a single mode, graded-index fiber is unnecessary, and only step-index fiber is used. The single mode obviates the issues of modal dispersion and pulse dispersion that plague multimode fiber (MMF). Optical signals do, however, suffer over long distances from chromatic dispersion and material dispersion. SMF is used in long haul, high speed fiber optic transmission systems (FOTS) such as those used in carrier backbone networks.
