单词 outlet glacier
释义
outlet glacier

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A tongue of ice that extends radially from an ice dome. It may be identified within the dome as a rapidly moving ribbon of ice (an ‘ice stream’), while beyond the dome it typically occupies a shallow, irregular depression. The 700 km long Lambert Glacier, Antarctica, is one of the world’s largest outlet glaciers.

Geography
  • A fast-moving section of glacier ice bordered by rock, differing from an ice stream, which is bordered by ice. For an example, see Glasser and Hambrey (2002) Sedimentol. 49, 1. An ice stream is a fast-flowing ‘river’ of ice within more slowly moving ice sheet walls.
