A site in western Greece. It was the location of the most important shrine to the god Zeus. An oracle of Zeus was there and every four years a festival of competitive games was held in his honour. Archaeologists have recovered much, most notably many of the sculptures of the temple of Zeus (5th century bc), and also the workshop where the gold and ivory statue of Zeus was created by the Athenian Phidias probably in the 430s bc.
