A French geologist who made a detailed study of European folded rocks, and concluded that these showed evidence of distinct mountain building episodes. His overly geometric treatment of the directions of mountain systems was criticized by his contemporaries, but his theory that the Earth is cooling, and therefore shrinking, found wider support.
