Small cones or chimneys of lava spatter, often several metres high, found on the surface of pahoehoe lava flows. Lava spatter is thrown out from the flow interior by the explosive release of primary magmatic gas or by the explosive conversion to steam of trapped pockets of groundwater beneath the flow.
