In the influential account by the contemporary philosopher Harry Frankfurt, bullshit describes any statement made without any concern for the truth. The ordinary submission to a discipline of trying to get things right is suspended, in favour of mere hot air, or sounding off. The suspension may be common knowledge, or the speaker may hope that his audience is unaware of his or her irresponsibility. With lying, by contrast a (deviant) connection with truth is intended, since liars deliberately state what they believe to be false, with the intention to deceive.
