A bird of prey that feeds almost exclusively on carrion, groups often circling above dying animals and descending together to feed. It is large, with a strongly hooked bill, broad wings, and often with a bare head. There are two families. Accipitridae includes nine genera of 16 species of Old World vultures, which forage by sight and occur in Africa and Eurasia. Cathartidae comprises five genera of seven species of New World vultures, unrelated to the Old World vultures, and found throughout the Americas as far north as southern Canada. New World vultures forage by scent.
