In 1839 he published The Organization of Labour in which he outlined his ideal of a new social order based on the principle ‘from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs’. In 1848 he headed a commission of workers’ delegates to find solutions to problems of exploitation and unemployment. The suppression of the workers’ revolt later that year forced him to flee to Britain and he did not return until 1871.
