A rule which describes the relationship between the attitude of a bed and its outcrop pattern for a given topography. In summary, if the outcrop pattern of a bed forms a V-shape pointing down-gradient, that is the direction in which the bed dips. The rule is most usefully applied when studying maps on which outcrop patterns show moderately dipping beds traversing valleys.
