Applied to the downward extension into sediment of a vertical or oblique burrow, frequently reflected in the development of spreiten distal to the point of entry. In U-shaped burrows the spreiten occur inside the bend of the ‘tube’. Protrusive spreiten are found in Diplocraterion and Rhizocorallium.
