A wading bird related to the sandpiper (family Scolopacidae), about 30 cm long with the male much larger than the female, that has a small head, a long neck, a round body, long legs, and a medium-length yellow or orange bill. It inhabits wet grassland and mud, feeding on invertebrates. It is migratory, wintering in southern and Western Europe and breeding across northern Eurasia.
