(died 1493) Inca emperor (1471–93), son of Pachacuti Inca (ruled 1438–71). While still heir‐apparent to the throne he led his father’s armies north, to conquer the powerful Chimú state on the north coast of Peru. After his accession to the throne he extended the empire to the south, conquering the northern half of Chile and part of Argentina. He also built the great fortress of Sacsahuaman, overlooking the imperial city of Cuzco. His successor, Huayna Capac (1493–1525) extended the northern boundaries even further, conquering Ecuador and founding Quito as the second Inca capital.
