A device that normally constrains a circuit-breaker in the ‘on’ position until actuated, when the circuit-breaker is allowed to break the circuit. Manual operation is common in many types of tripping device. Other types are operated electromagnetically. A typical example is the trip coil, which consists of a coil that controls a movable plunger or armature; the plunger controls the action of the circuit-breaker.
