  • The main institution of European unity, formed in 1967 from the European Atomic Energy Community, the European Coal and Steel Community, and the European Economic Community. In 1993 its title changed to the European Union. Its six founder members were Belgium, France, (West) Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Denmark, Ireland, and the UK joined in 1973, Greece in 1979, and Portugal and Spain in 1986.


World History
  • An organization of Western European countries, which came into being in 1967 when the executive bodies of the European Economic Community (Common Market or EEC), European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM), and European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), merged. Committed to economic and political integration as envisaged by the Treaties of Rome, in 1993 it was absorbed into the European Union. It was abolished in 2009 by the Lisbon Treaty.
