A type of chemical reaction in which two molecules combine to form a larger molecule with the elimination of a smaller molecule such as water, hydrogen chloride, or methanol. In a polymerization reaction, similar or different monomers form a long-chain polymer with the release of water molecules, such as in the formation of polyester. The formation of a peptide from two amino acids also involves the elimination of a water molecule.
