who developed the theory of cumulants. Thiele studied astronomy at U Copenhagen (MSc, 1860; ScD, 1866). He was Professor of Astronomy at Copenhagen Observatory from 1875 to 1907, Rector of U Copenhagen from 1900 to 1906, and founder of the Danish Actuarial Society in 1901.
