An international organization using meteorological satellites to supply medium-range weather forecasts to its European member states. Located in Reading, England, the ECMWF has working arrangements with the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the African Centre for Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD).
The ECMWF was established in 1973 and was originally a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) project. Its member states are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the UK. It also has cooperative agreements with Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Iceland, Romania, Slovenia, and Serbia and Montenegro.
