An almost spherical marine fish (family Cyclopteridae), up to 50 cm long, with skin lacking scales but bearing rows of bony thorns, small, rounded fins, and pelvic fins modified into adhesive discs with which they grip the substrate. They feed on invertebrates on the seabed at depths down to 1700 m. Their roe, treated with salt and blackened, is marketed as cheap caviar.
