US museum honouring astronauts. Located in Titusville, Florida, near the Kennedy Space Center, it contains tributes to astronauts inducted into the hall, tells the story of human space flight, and features the world's largest collection of astronaut mementos. It was created in 1984 by the non-profit Mercury Seven Foundation (now the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation), established by the six surviving members of the ‘Original Seven’ Mercury project astronauts. Since 1987 it has operated in conjunction with the US Space Camp on the same site. In 2003, Sally Ride became the first woman astronaut inducted into the Hall of Fame, and by December 2017, 95 astronauts have been inducted. To date, the foundation has also awarded more than $4.5 million in scholarships to nearly 500 college students pursuing degrees in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering.
