A yearly publication containing tables of the Sun, Moon, and planets and their satellites, and other astronomical data. It is compiled and published jointly by the US Naval Observatory and HM Nautical Almanac Office. It began in Britain in 1766 under the title The Nautical Almanac and Astronomical Ephemeris, but from 1914 two separate versions were issued, one for astronomers and one for navigators (see Nautical Almanac, The). In 1960 the name of the astronomical version was abridged to The Astronomical Ephemeris. The current title was adopted in 1980 when it merged with The American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac, published in the US since 1852 (for the year 1855).
