单词 base
释义
base

Physics
  • 1. (in mathematics) a. The number of different symbols in a number system. In the decimal system the base is 10; in binary notation it is 2. b. The number that when raised to a certain power has a logarithm equal to that power. For example if 10 is raised to the power of 3 it is equal to 1000; 3 is then the (common) logarithm of 1000 to the base 10. In natural or Napierian logarithms the base is e. To change the base from common to natural logarithms the formula used is: log10y=logey × log10e=0.43429logey.

    2. (in electronics) See transistor.

Chemistry
  • A compound that reacts with a protonic acid to give water (and a salt). The definition comes from the Arrhenius theory of acids and bases. Typically, bases are metal oxides, hydroxides, or compounds (such as ammonia) that give hydroxide ions in aqueous solution. Thus, a base may be either:

    1. (1) An insoluble oxide or hydroxide that reacts with an acid, e.g.

      CuO(s)+2HCl(aq)CuCl2(aq)+H2O(l)

      Here the reaction involves hydrogen ions from the acid

      CuO(s)+2H+(aq)H2O(l)+Cu2+(aq)

    2. (2) A soluble hydroxide, in which case the solution contains hydroxide ions. The reaction with acids is a reaction between hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions:

      H++OH-H2O

    3. (3) A compound that dissolves in water to produce hydroxide ions. For example, ammonia reacts as follows:

      NH3(g)+H2O(l)NH4+(aq)+-OH

      Similar reactions occur with organic amines (see also nitrogenous base; amine salts). A base that dissolves in water to give hydroxide ions is called an alkali. Ammonia and sodium hydroxide are common examples.

    The original Arrhenius definition of a base has been extended by the Lowry-Brønsted theory and by the Lewis theory. See acid.

Chemical Engineering
  • 1. A substance that has the tendency to gain protons and form hydroxyl ions in solution. A base is neutralized by an acid to form a salt and water.

    2. Used in mathematics, the base is the number of different symbols used in a numbering system. In the binary system the base is 2, while in the decimal system the base is 10.

Computer
  • 1. Another name for the radix of a positional number system. Hence decimal numbers are base 10 numbers and binary numbers are base 2 numbers. See number system.

    2. See base-bound register, relative addressing.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • The region in a bipolar junction transistor between the emitter and collector into which minority carriers are injected. The electrode attached to the base is the base electrode. See also semiconductor.

Biology
  • A compound that reacts with an acid to give water (and a salt). A base that dissolves in water to produce hydroxide ions is called an alkali. For example, ammonia reacts as follows:

    NH3+H2ONH4++OH

    Similar reactions occur with organic amines (see also nitrogenous base).

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • According to the Brønsted–Lowry theory, a substance that in solution can bind and remove hydrogen ions or protons. The Lewis theory states that it is a substance that acts as an electron-pair donor. A base reacts with an acid to give a salt and water (a process called neutralization), and has a pH greater than 7.0. The theory was proposed in 1923 by the Danish physical chemist Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted (1879–1947) and the British chemist Thomas Martin Lowry (1874–1936), and independently by the American theoretical chemist Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875–1946).
