A NASA space probe launched in 1998 January that went into a 100-km-high polar orbit around the Moon, later reduced to as low as 15 km, from which it mapped the Moon’s surface composition and measured its gravitational field. Data from the probe’s neutron spectrometer instrument suggested the existence of large subsurface ice deposits at the lunar poles. The mission ended in 1999 July when Lunar Prospector was deliberately crashed into an area near the Moon’s south pole.

A spin-stabilized spacecraft (1.4 × 1.2 m) sent into orbit on 7 January 1998 as a NASA Discovery Mission to study the Moon. It was launched on an Athena 2 launch vehicle from the Kennedy Space Center. Mission objectives were to ‘prospect’ the lunar crust and atmosphere for potential resources (minerals, water ice, and gases) and to map the Moon's gravitational and magnetic fields and core. It was deliberately crashed into a crater near the Moon's south pole on 31 July 1999 in an unsuccessful attempt to discover traces of water.
