whose career was divided between England and the USA. Johnson was a graduate of UCL, joining its faculty on either side of the Second World War, during which he was seconded to the London Ordnance Board. In 1948 he obtained his PhD (supervised by Egon Pearson). Whilst at UCL he supervised Jenkins and Mallows. In 1962 he moved to UNC. He was presented with the Shewhart Medal of the ASQ in 1984 and the Wilks Award of the ASA in 1993.
