An observatory of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, opened in 2001 at an altitude of 4500 metres on Mt Saraswati at Hanle in the Himalayas of northern India. Its main instrument is the 2-m optical–infrared Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT). It is also the site of the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment Telescope (MACE), a gamma-ray telescope.
