Grotrian diagram

Astronomy

A diagram of the energy levels for a given atom or ion. It shows the transitions which are allowed between the various electron energy levels, and hence the spectral features that arise as a result. The diagram is an essential tool for understanding and identifying lines of elements such as iron that have a large number of energy levels and hence very complex spectra. It is named after the German physicist Walter Robert Wilhelm Grotrian (1890–1954).

The intensity of the transition can be represented on a Grotrian diagram by allowing the thickness of the line to represent the transition proportional to the intensity.
