A multi-national observatory that consists of two identical 8.1-m telescopes for optical and near-infrared astronomy on separate sites, one in the northern hemisphere and the other in the south, together providing all-sky coverage. Gemini North, known as the Frederick C. Gillett Gemini Telescope, opened in 1999, at an altitude of 4210 m on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Gemini South, opened in 2002, is at an altitude of 2715 m on Cerro Pachón, a mountain in the Chilean Andes. The partners in the Gemini Observatory are the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. The Gemini Observatory is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy on behalf of the owner nations and has its headquarters in Hilo, Hawaii.
