Kaplan obtained his BS in Mathematics at Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1941 and then worked at the US Naval Ordnance Lab in Maryland. In 1951 he obtained his PhD at Princeton U, where he worked with Feller and Wilks. From 1950 to 1957 he worked at Bell Labs, NJ, where he studied the estimation of the survivor function (see hazard rate). His classic paper with Meier was published in 1958. In 1961 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Oregon State U, where he specialized in linear programming.
