The scientific study of ore (opaque) minerals by means of a polarizing reflected-light microscope. Systematic observations of reflectance and hardness are made in order to identify individual minerals, and the interpretation of textural relationships and paragenetic studies may reveal the sequence of mineral formation. It is an important technique in the study of metallic mineral deposits.
