Orbiting Astronomical Observatory

Astronomy
  • A series of NASA astronomy satellites operating mainly in the ultraviolet. The first successful mission, OAO-2, was launched in 1968 December. It carried Celescope, a group of four 0.32-m telescopes, plus several other telescopes for ultraviolet observations. Space Exploration
  • A series of four NASA orbiting observatories including Copernicus (OAO-3), the fourth and last of the craft to be launched. OAO-2 was launched in December 1968 as the heaviest satellite at that time, weighing 1 890 kg. It carried 11 telescopes, including 4 ultraviolet and 4 photoelectric. During its mission, OAO-2 discovered a supernova (May 1972) and carried out imaging of young stars. OAO-3 was launched in August 1972, with the largest telescope at that time, and studied ultraviolet radiation from stars and interstellar gas and dust. The other two missions were not successful: OAO-1 was launched in April 1966 but quickly suffered a power failure; OAO-B (the third in the series) failed during its launch in November 1970.
