A large, herbivorous mammal (family Elephantidae) with very large ears, incisor teeth modified to form tusks, and the nose and upper lip fused to form an elongated, muscular trunk used for breathing, smelling, touching, grasping and manipulating, obtaining food and water, and generating sounds. Elephants occur in a variety of habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia, and South East Asia. There are three species, the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), African forest elephant (L. cyclotis), and Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
