A rectifier that has two dissimilar electrodes in an electrolyte. Suitable combinations of electrodes and electrolyte produce a system that conducts much more readily in one direction than the other. A typical combination is the tantalum rectifier, which contains tantalum and lead electrodes and a dilute solution of sulphuric acid as the electrolyte.
