The reversible separation of certain substances in solution into oppositely charged electrolytic ions. The positively charged ions are cations, the negatively charged ones anions. Some compounds, such as sodium chloride, are completely dissociated whereas others, such as acetic acid, are only partially dissociated. See also electrolyte.
