A chemical substance that when released into the environment gives rise to harmful and damaging effects on living organisms. The substance can be either a toxic substance that is harmful to the environment by being resistant to biodegradation such as pesticides, or can already be present in the environment but is added in excessive amounts such as nitrogen into the soil that accumulates in lakes and rivers.
