A method that is widely used to overcome the phase problem in X-ray crystallography. This method, invented in 1953 by Herb Hauptman (1917–2011) and Jerome Karle (1918–2013), uses statistical correlations and probability theory to analyse the X-ray diffraction pattern and hence determine the crystal structure. The direct method greatly speeded up the determination of crystal structures.
