(from Anglo-Saxon aetheline, ‘prince’) (c.1052–c.1125) The grandson of Edmund Ironside. His father’s death (1057) in exile left Edgar as the heir to Edward the Confessor in 1066, but because of his youth he was rejected in favour of Harold II. On Harold’s death at the Battle of Hastings the Witan chose Edgar as king but, despite his involvement in a rebellion against William I (1069), he was unable to organize any further resistance and became a member of William’s court (1074). He was captured by Henry I at Tinchebrai (1106) for supporting Henry’s older brother Robert of Normandy (Curthose), but was later released.
