A South American anteater, armadillo, or sloth, or an Old World pangolin or aardvark. These mammals formerly comprised the order Edentata, based on the fact that they all have a reduced number of peg-like teeth (none in the anteaters), strong claws used for digging or hanging, and a small brain. The South American species, however, are now placed in the superorder Xenarthra, based on a unique arrangement of extra vertebral articulations. The aardvark and pangolin, which are not closely related to the South American species, are in separate orders, so the terms Edentata and edentate are no longer used.
