A roughly circular movement within a current of air or water. An eddy may be a vortex (Thompson and Young (2006) J. Phys. Oceanog. 36, 4), show helicoidal flow, or the cylindrical motion of rollers, or appear as a surge phenomenon (a short-lived outbreak of greater velocity in a flow; see Mass and Allbright (1989) Monthly Weather Rev. 117, 11).
