The zone around individuals—usually that reserved for a normal conversational voice and for friendly interaction—which they reserve for themselves. The extent of a personal space around an individual is reckoned to be 1–1.5 m for an Anglo-Saxon (Beaulieu (2004) J. Applied Social Psych. 34, 4). Empowerment strategies provide a conduit for women to claim personal space (George (2007) Gender, Space & Cult. 14, 6). Barker (2000) Area 32, 4 only hints at the ‘globalization of personal space’, as does McCormack (2003) TIBG 28 at the ‘personal space of emotion’.
