An independent US organization promoting astronomy and astronautics. Established in 1899, it has about 7 000 members as of 2017. The Division of Planetary Sciences, formed in 1968, is now its largest division, with more than 1 400 planetary scientists and astronomers, 20% of whom live abroad (latest 2010 data). The AAS's headquarters are in Washington, DC.
